LONDON (MarketWatch) -- Ambac Financial Group Inc. said Wednesday that it swung to a third-quarter net loss of $360.6 million, or $3.51 a share, from a profit of $213.5 million, or $1.98 a share, a year earlier. Ambac said the loss was due to the previously-announced unrealized loss on credit derivatives exposure of $743.4 million, which stemmed from the drop in market prices of collateralized debt obligations. Excluding the impact of this loss, operating earnings slipped 2% to $1.88 a share, matching analyst expectations according to a survey by Thomson Financial. The group said it has seen improved overall market conditions in most asset classes of its core financial guarantee product, despite the turmoil in structured finance markets.
