CHINESE advertising firm Focus Media will acquire 100 percent of rival CGEN Digital Media Co Ltd, which is planning to list shares on Nasdaq. The deal will allow Focus to dominate China's in-store television advertising market and turn around declining sales in its network. Focus, China's largest overseas-listed advertising firm, will pay US$168.4 million in cash for CGEN Digital. Both firms are based in Shanghai. The deal, announced late on Monday night, will give the company stronger bargaining power to scale back discounts, industry observers said yesterday. An additional payment of up to US$181.6 million, part in cash and part in Focus's shares, will be offered if CGEN meets certain earnings targets during the next 24 months after the transaction, which is expected to close in the first quarter next year. And, following an experiment at a few locations last year, the retailer has set up a "Christmas Shop" in each of its 1,500 outlets with garden centers. "This is still a nation where the majority of people consider themselves Christian," said Patricia Edwards, a Seattle-based portfolio manager at Wentworth, Hauser & Violich, with US$13.4 billion in assets including Wal-Mart shares. GOOGLE Inc is in talks with Verizon Communications Inc and Sprint Nextel Corp about developing mobile-phone software and services. Two people familiar with the discussions revealed the deal to Bloomberg News. Google, owner of the world's most-popular Internet search engine, may build a phone-operating system or applications, said the people, who wanted anonymity because the talks are private. "It portends a pretty interesting combo," said Mike McGuire, an analyst at Stamford, Connecticut-based research firm Gartner Inc. Google shares rose to a record on Tuesday on speculation the company will extend its dominance of Internet advertising into wireless devices. For Verizon and Sprint, ranked second and third in United States mobile-phone customers, new programs may help bolster revenue from data services. Google's help will also give them an edge against larger rival AT&T Inc, the exclusive US service provider for Apple Inc's iPhone. Verizon Wireless spokesman Jim
